Limits and beyond in reconstructive periodontal and peri-implant surgery

As a result of developments in the field of regeneration, clinicians have been adopting patient-friendly minimally invasive approaches. New techniques and flap designs have improved clinical outcomes and improved patient comfort. However, due to certain clinical conditions, natural teeth are lost and dental implant placement is the best alternative for missing teeth. In cases when implants are present with natural teeth, certain challenges are faced in the management of treatment due to anatomic differences. For a successful surgical outcome, blood supply, management of soft tissues, flap thickness, design and tension are the main factors. These factors should be definitely assessed and checked during surgery. Taking these factors under control may not be sufficient for dentists who target an excellent outcome. Hard and soft tissue deficiencies due to inappropriate treatments or clinical conditions will result in great challenges for dentists. On the other hand, successful outcome does not only rely on surgical procedures; whereas appropriate prosthetic procedures play a crucial role. When aesthetic is the primary goal, a healthy soft tissue interface and tooth-like natural look should be designed specific to individual patients. In this presentation, critical aspects and new approaches related to the reconstruction of tissues around natural teeth and implants will be discussed.

Graduating from Ege University Faculty of Dentistry, Serhat Aslan completed his PhD in Periodontology at Ege University Health Sciences Institute. He practices as specialist periodontologist at his own clinic. He’s a visiting faculty at Milan University (Italy), Biomedical, Surgery, Dental Sciences Department and at Porto University (Portugal), Periodontology and Implantology specialist education. He contributed to the field of regenerative periodontal surgery by describing Entire papilla preservation. He has been a keynote speaker at national and international congresses and awarded with science and presentation prizes. He’s central executive board member and treasurer of Turkish Society of Periodontology. He’s an active member of European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP), International Team for Implantology (ITI) and Turkish Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EDAD). Implementing single and multi center studies in the field of periodontology, Dr. Aslan focuses on effects of regenerative biomaterials and different surgical techniques on soft and hard tissues and their clinical outcomes.
