Treatment of Periimplantitis - light at the end of the tunnel?
A new concept in treating periimplantitis
Periimplant pathology is an increasingly frequent problem in dentistry worldwide with dramatic consequences if not properly diagnosed. Reviews of treatment effectiveness and efficacy as well as dental community's clinical experience demonstrate that no treatment modality achieves reasonable long-term result comparable to the treatment of periodontitis.
The aim of this lecture is to provide an overview of current treatment options of periimplantitis. Furthermore, a new electro-chemical approach to remove the biofilm from infected implant surfaces will be presented. This cleaning method demonstrated complete re-osseointegration of previously contaminated surfaces for the first time in human histology. This proven complete removal of biofilm from any type of metallic implant surface shows that we need to reevaluate the current treatment concepts for periimplantitis.
