Prof. Dr. Bülent Katiboğlu

Dental implantology has gained an important position in dentistry in the last decades. Dental implants are widely used in the dental rehabilitation of fully or partially edentulous patients. Dental implants have developed technologically and scientifically over time and become an efficient alternative treatment for tooth loss. The success of dental implants is defined by the realization of the structural and functional union between living bone and implant, which is called “osseointegration”. The continuity of bone support has a major impact on the success of implant treatments. Studies revealed that the bone losses around the implant varies. While a maximum bone loss of 1.5 mm is considered normal around successfully osseointegrated implants within one year after loading, a bone loss of 0.2 mm is considered normal in the following years..

The success of dental implants is affected by many other factors in the early and late osseointegration period, following the surgeon's application technique and working conditions. During the application, choosing the appropriate jawbone, planning the places where the implants will be placed, and choosing the implant types according to the structure of the jawbone of the implants are among the other factors affecting the success. Even if all the conditions to achieve a successful osseointegration are provided, the maintenance of a prosthetic superstructure with a good indication after osseointegration will be directly related to oral hygiene. Even in cases where the prosthesis is extremely balanced and the indication is perfect, the health of dental implants progresses in parallel with the patient's oral hygiene and oral health. When oral hygiene conditions are not respected, predisposing factors will definitely emerge in the long term.
