Current Approaches in Orthognathic Surgery

Acquired or congenital dentofacial deformities are disorders that dentists encounter in their routin clinical practise frequently. Dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists take an active role in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Since dentofacial deformities are disorders in which teeth, jaw bones and other anatomical structures forming the face affected together, they considered as the etiological factors of not only aesthetic problems, but also the masticatory function disorders, airway-related complications, growth abnormalities and temporomandibular joint disorders.

The purpose of this presentation is to share current orthognathic surgical methods used for the treatment of dentofacial deformities with dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists. In the presentation, digital surgical planing techniques, procedures performed via custom miniplates and operation guides produced by using 3D design and production technologies, multi-piece osteotomy techniques and complementary surgical procedures such as fat grafting applications and facial implants will be presented.

Erol Cansız was born in 1983 in İstanbul. After graduating from Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry, he got his speciality at İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery and became a faculty member at the same department with his title of assistant professor. To get his education on head and neck surgery, he worked at İstanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology Department for six months. To improve his knowledge and experience in maxillofacial surgery, he worked at Clinicum Osnabruck Maxillofacial Surgery Department in Osnabruck, Germany and St.Georges Medical University Maxillofacial Surgery Department in London, UK. Receiving his title of Associate Professor in Oral Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2019, Erol CANSIZ graduated from Bezmialem Foundation University Faculty of Medicine in 2022.
Erol CANSIZ has been pursuing his academic and clinical career since 2019 at İstanbul University Faculty of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department as well as İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry Oral Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Department as an additional duty.
He’s in interested in all domains of maxillofacial surgery and has a special interest in orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint surgery.
