Peri-implant Plastic Surgery: Current approaches to peri-implant hard and soft tissue problems

Thanks to the scientific developments in implant applications, medical success has been increasing day by day and patients’ expectations can be met better. Implant rehabilitation is not a tool any more to restore only chewing and phonetic functions. One of the most important targets of modern implantology is now to achieve ideal treatment outcomes related to the structural and esthetic regeneration of edentalous regions. Long-term success of functions and esthetics in dental implants depends on certain degree of harmony between hard and soft tissues. This is only when we can talk about the health of peri-implant tissue that resists mechanical forces and bacterial plaque. Peri-implant plastic surgical approaches not only provide satisfactory esthetic results covering both hard and soft tissues and also contribute to the formation of healthy peri-implant tissues that resist occlusal forces and mucogingival stress. Treatment of hard and soft tissue problems including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis that may develop after implantation is another important goal of peri-implant plastic surgery.
