Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation – Current concept and management

Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH) is an enamel defect affecting mainly the incisors and first permanent molars. Its prevalence is worldwide, and its aetiology is elusive. Apart from causing pain and sensitivities, aesthetics is the major concern for the patients. There are confusions of what management options are the most appropriate with minimal damage to these teeth. The European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry has recently published an evidence based review of this condition. This lecture aims to update the audience of the current concept, supplemented by clinical cased on the challenges and management of these cases in children. The objectives are:

  • To give an overview of the prevalence of MIH
  • To give an overview of the aetiology of MIH
  • To present the modalities and types of MIH to aid diagnosis
  • To present the aesthetic management of anterior teeth for children/adolescents with MIH
  • To present treatment options of posterior teeth for children with MIH

In the past two years since I took on this duty, I have successfully bided for over £100,000 to provide educational equipment to run these courses.
  • Chairman for National Policy and Clinical Effectiveness Committee for Paediatric Dentistry (2004-2007) - This is under the auspices of the Royal college of Surgeons England and British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. The committee is responsible in collaborating national clinical audit, production of guidelines and audit recipes. I am an author of a number of Audit Recipes.
  • Member of Barts and The London Trust Policy working Group (2005-2008)
  • Module Convenor for Preparation for Vocational Training in the 1999 Dental Curriculum – developing, planning and implementing the teaching of this new module. The new curriculum has just completed its first cohort and the student evaluation for this module is good (1999-2008).
