Posterior indirect restorations with biomimetic approaches

Thanks to the developments achieved in adhesive dentistry and material science in the last 30 years,  dentistry has evolved from mechanical perspective to biological approaches. Despite all these developments, conventional full coverage crowns are still preferred by many dentists as primary treatment approch in many cases requiring coverage of tubercule. Moreover, during preparations for conventional full coverage crowns, 70-75% of the tooth tissue weight is removed while only 32-47% of tooth tissue weight is removed during conservative  onlay and “overlay” preparations. In particular with the mechanical strength and adhesive property of full ceramic materials such as lithium disilicate, severely damaged teeth can be restored by less tooth tissue removal and in a way to restore biomechanical properties of natural tooth tissue. In this presentation, basic concepts of biomimetic dentistry such as “immediate dentin sealing”, deep margin elevation and ceramic onlay and “overlay” restoration will be discussed.
