Occlusal Splint Therapy for Temporomandibular Disorders

Temporomandibular disorders are among the most common disorders we encounter at our clinical practice. Dentists play an important role for the treatment of these disorders. Occlusal splints are one of the most common therapies applied by dentists in clinical practice in a multidisciplinary approach. Occlusal splints can be produced with different techniques. In this talk, I will describe the production of occlusal splints with different techniques, basic properties they must have, what needs to be done during delivery to patients at clinic and subsequent follow-ups. Moreover, indications, advantages and disadvantages of different types of occlusal splints used for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders will be discussed.

He was born in 1974 in Muğla. He completed his primary education at Muğla Atatürk Primary School and lower and upper secondary education at Muğla Anatolian High School. He got to İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry in 1992 where he graduated in 1997. He completed his PhD on Prosthetic Dentistry at İstanbul University Institute of Health Sciences. He worked at the Total Partial Prosthesis Division, Department of Prosthetic Dentistry of the Faculty of Dentistry at the same university from 1998 to 2011. In 2011-2021, he worked at İstanbul Medipol University Faculty of Dentistry. Since 2021, he’s been working at İstanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Dentistry. Prof. Dr. Hanefi Kurt is married with a child.
