Ceramic and Ceramic-Like Materials, Clinial Applications, Cementation Techniques

Ceramic and ceramic-like materials can be classified as: glass-matrix ceramics, resin-matrix ceramics and polycrystalline ceramics. Adhesive cementation technique has been developed for glass-matrix ceramic restorations. During adhesive cementation procedure further surface treatments can be conducted both prepared tooth surface and inner surface of the restoration. Depending on tooth preparation depth: on enamel, dentin and both enamel and dentin, adhesive systems as etch-and-rinse, etch-and-dry or selective-etch can be applied. Inner surface of the restoration should be treated by hydrofluoric acid etching followed by silanisation and light- or dual-cure composite resin luting cement. Adhesive cementation technique can be applied to resin-matrix ceramic restorations as well.

Crown and fixed partial denture (bridge) restorations fabricated by polycrystalline ceramic (zirconia/Y-TZP) can be cemented by conventional cementation technique utulising resin modified glass ionomer or self adhesive resin cement. However, inner surfaces of adhesive-bridge/resin bonded bridge restoration should be etch by sandblasting and MDP-based adhesive system and MDP-based chemically- or dual-cured composite resin luting cement should be used for adhesive cementation technique.
