SURGICAL TREATMENT OF TMJ DISEASES
More than 90% of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases can be treated wişth non-surgical conservative treatments. However, in cases when conservative treatment does not suffice, surgical approaches may be needed. Moreover, pathologies requiring surgical treatment such as pathologies of choronoid process requiring surgical treatment (hyperplasia, exostosis, osteoma, chondroma, osteochondroma, developmental anomalies), articular eminence growth, chondyle oathologies (tumors, developmental anomalies), chondyle, choronoid, zygomatic fractures, styloid process elongation, styloid ligament calcificaiton and TMJ ankylosis may also be present. Therefore, pathologies requiring TMJ surgery will be discussed in the light of the cases we treated at our faculty. In addition, diagnosis and treatment of TMJ pathologies that cause limited mouth opening will also be presented.
Sırmahan Çakarer was born in 1979 in İstanbul. She studied at İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry in 1997-2002. She completed her PhD and speciality education at Oral Dental and Maxillofacial Department in 2002-2008. After completing her PhD on distraction osteogenesis in 2008, she completed her fellowship at Münster University Research Hospital on maxillofacial trauma and bone deformities. In 2012, she was an observer at Boston University Dental School Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department to improve her experience in the field of TMJ surgery and orthognatic surgery. She received her title of associate professor in 2012 and professor in 2020. Having national and international presentations and publications regarding maxillofacial surgery practice, Sırmahan Çakarer is the secretary general of the Turkish Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. At present, she conducts her studies at İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry, Oral Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Department.
