Prosthethic Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can be grouped under several sub-categories. It is very important to select the right treatment protocol according to evidence-based dentistry to treat TMJ disorders. There are specific diagnostic and treatment methods for each of these disorders. They usually require certain level of knowledge and experience. Occlusal splint is the most commonly used treatment approach for TMJ disorders. The aim of occlusal splints is to restore the lost static and dynamic balance of the stomatognatic system.

It is not always necessary to correct occlusion after temporomandibular disorders. But in certain cases, when Phase II treatment is initiated after Phase I; static and dynamic balange that has been restored may not match with occlusion. In such cases, it may be necessary to realign centric relation, increase vertical height and provide some liberation at the centric level. In this presentation, I will talk about Phase II treatment methods in the prosthetic Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders.
